The Edo State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, September 10 still hangs in the balance, as INEC, has said it would need to consult with the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services, DSS, before arriving at a decision on the election.
The police and DSS, had during a joint press briefing at the
DSS headquarters, asked INEC to postpone the election over security fears.
But the electoral body, after a meeting with political stakeholders and state actors, failed to take a decision on the postponement.
INEC however said its independence would not be compromised.
Speaking on the development, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, said the commission just met again with stakeholders where different opinions were expressed.
According to him, the electoral body decided there was need to consult with the DSS and the police to find out why they gave the security advice after which a decision would be taken.
“Thereafter, INEC will take a decision that will be communicated to all Nigerians. However, the Commission wishes to assure all Nigerians that its independence will not be compromised”, Oyekanmi said.
